Was Jesus really God?

The short answer is “yes”. He indeed was the Son of God and the Son of Man and God himself. He was not half man, half God. He was fully God and fully man. From a logical perspective on trying to explain how that is possible, what is infinity divided by 2? Well, it’s infinity.
Some might claim that Jesus never called himself God, however, he did in fact call himself God on more than one occasion.
-John 14:9 “Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?”
-John 8:58 “I tell you the truth,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!”
-John 10:30 “I and the Father are one”
Some might be thrown off by why John 8:58 is a claim that he is God but this actually happens to be the most clear passage of Jesus claim to be God. It’s not simply the fact that he claims to be older than Abraham, but the “I am” part that is so significant. It really doesn’t translate into English that well because unlike French and Spanish we don’t use endings on our verbs to indicate the pronoun, however if you know any Spanish you know that you do not have to say “Yo soy” to say “I am” just “Soy”. Hebrew is the same way but in fact it was considered blasphemous to say “Yo Soy” instead of “Soy” (if it were Spanish), because “Yo soy” is the direct name of God (which is actually Yahweh). Well, Jesus in this verse basically says the name of God, which would better translate into English as “I I am”. That is why they immediately wanted to take and stone him after he said this because he used God’s name. So not only is he just claiming to be God but he is claiming to be specifically THE God, Yahweh.
It is because of the messianic prophecy that we also know that Jesus is the messiah. So was the messiah supposed to be God as well? According to Isaiah 9:6-7, yes, he certainly was. Isaiah 9:6 “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” This prophecy is overwhelmingly stating that the messiah would be God, not only God but the Father and the Holy Spirit.
Some might say that the early Christians did not believe that Jesus was God. If that were true then they weren’t listening to the disciples or Paul. Many will say that Paul did not believe that Jesus was God. Those who say that read into his writings what is not there, they use vague references and notions to say that. However, Paul says very plainly in Philippians 2:5-6 “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus, who being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped.” Websters defines “nature” as “the inherent character”. In other words, God was who he was.
Some might question whether he is God simply because the only evidence we have is biblical. Well, there really isn’t a DNA test to prove that someone is God. You can’t put it in a test tube and prove for certain that he is the one Creator of the universe. The only way that we can know God is by his own description of himself.
The messianic prophecies say that the messiah will be God. Jesus fulfilled all the prophecies of the messiah and he himself claimed to be God. The apostles and Paul believed that Jesus was God. In the words of Woody, “if the boot fits…”
